A 1950s U.S. Air Force N-2B flight jacket. What’s more, it’s an EX-LARGE size, which is extremely rare among vintage pieces.

The N-2B is a model that debuted in the 1950s as the successor to the N-2A, designed as a heavy-duty flight jacket for use in extremely cold environments. It is one of the iconic cold-weather flight jackets representing the U.S. Air Force during its transition to the jet age, and even at this early stage, it already featured a refined design—including a short body length, a large hood, and a utility pocket on the left sleeve—that would be carried forward for years to come.

This piece is a sage green jacket typical of early N-2B models. The tag still bears the inscriptions “JACKET, FLYING, MAN’S HEAVY ATTACHED HOOD / TYPE N-2B,” the manufacturer’s name “ROLEN SPORTSWEAR COMPANY,” and the size “EX-LARGE.”Based on the tag, this is believed to be an early-generation piece manufactured around the late 1950s.

Particularly appealing are the substantial brass CONMAR zippers remaining on the front and the left sleeve pocket. A leather pull tab is also still present on the front, allowing you to fully appreciate the authentic 1950s texture that is distinctly different from modern flight jackets. The USAF decal is also beautifully preserved.

The hood, an iconic feature of the N-2B, is also intact. It features a zipper in the center of the hood, allowing it to be opened and closed to expand to the left and right—a unique design. The fur trim around the hood and the faux fur lining on the inside are also preserved, giving it the overwhelming volume characteristic of a jacket designed for heavy-duty use.

Condition: Used. Overall, it is in good condition considering its age. The sage green shell shows some localized stains and areas that have discolored to a reddish hue due to aging. This reddish patina is a distinctive characteristic unique to vintage nylon flight jackets. The ribbing on the sleeves and waist shows small holes and damage that appears to be from moth damage, but at present, this does not significantly impair the jacket’s wearability. Additionally, there are minor scuffs and stains, reflecting normal wear and tear appropriate for its age.

Early sage green, brass CONMAR, split hood with fur, and size EX-LARGE.

Considering both its 1950s era and size, this is an exceptionally attractive piece even among actual N-2B jackets. It is recommended not only for wear but also as a collectible piece representative of early Jet Age U.S. Air Force flight wear.
