The N-2A is a flight jacket developed and adopted by the U.S. Air Force in the early 1950s, shortly after its establishment, for flight missions in extremely cold regions.
The N-2A’s greatest appeal is, without a doubt, its Air Force Blue. Having just separated from the Army Air Corps in 1947, the U.S. Air Force adopted shades of blue as the colors symbolizing its new branch of service. Consequently, this beautiful navy blue flight jacket is a special model that was manufactured only during the limited period of the Air Force’s early years.
Later, as combat operations progressed and the importance of camouflage increased, the color was changed to sage green, a design that was carried forward into the N-2B and MA-1 models. Consequently, the Air Force Blue N-2A had a very short production run and is now highly sought after as a flight jacket that symbolizes the early days of the USAF.
Furthermore, this N-2A served as the direct predecessor to the N-2B, which remained in service for many years, well into the Vietnam War era. Its basic design—featuring a large fur-lined hood, a short cut, and a silhouette that did not restrict movement inside the cockpit—was already fully established at this point and would be passed down to later iconic flight jackets. It is an indispensable piece when discussing the history of U.S. Air Force flight jackets.
This item is an original piece manufactured in the early to mid-1950s. Its rarity as a LARGE size adds to its significant appeal. While SMALL to MEDIUM sizes of the N-2A are commonly found on the market, LARGE sizes are scarce, making this size particularly popular as it is well-suited for modern wear. The hood detaches via a zipper, making it highly practical.
The tags are still intact, and the jacket is in excellent condition. Among the Air Force Blue N-2A jackets—which are gradually disappearing from the market year by year—this is a collector’s piece that is impeccable in both size and condition. It is truly a wonderful piece that allows you to experience firsthand the history of the early U.S. Air Force and the evolution of the flight jacket.
