A classic flight jacket developed by the U.S. Navy for flight missions in extremely cold conditions, commonly known as the “G-8.”Although it is widely known in Japan by the nickname “WEP jacket,” there is actually no official designation as “G-8”; instead, it is often listed in documents and on tags as J-WFS (Winter Flying Suit) or “Jacket, Winter Flying Suit,” making it a truly fascinating piece.

Used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Aviation from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, this jacket was originally designed as a winter flight jacket issued alongside the G-1 leather jacket.Featuring a lightweight nylon shell, it combines excellent cold-weather protection with freedom of movement. It is packed with details that embody functional beauty, such as a short silhouette designed for ease of movement in a cramped cockpit, a stand-up ribbed collar, and action pleats.

This particular jacket is believed to have been manufactured around the early 1970s. It is a “golden size”—approximately a 38 to 40—making it very comfortable for Japanese people to wear.

It is well known that many G-8 jackets that saw actual use exhibit tears or rips in the ribbing or lining. However, this particular jacket is in excellent condition in those areas—which are often considered its weak points—and is in impeccable condition considering its age. It’s a wonderful piece that retains the unique charm of an original while remaining safe to wear for years to come. In particular, pieces without tags—which were typically intended for operational use—are considered to be in exceptionally rare condition.

In recent years, thanks to its refined design, it has continued to receive high acclaim not only in the vintage market but also in the fashion scene, and as a naval flight jacket that stands apart from the MA-1 and L-2B, it has gained popularity among collectors worldwide. Production numbers were never particularly high, and finding well-preserved examples is becoming increasingly difficult with each passing year.

Condition

Used.

While it shows some signs of wear commensurate with its age, the condition of the ribbing and lining—areas where the G-8 is prone to damage—is excellent. Overall, it’s in superb condition, making it a highly recommended piece that you can confidently wear or add to your vintage collection.
