Tiger Stripe, a camouflage pattern synonymous with the Vietnam War, continues to captivate collectors around the world. This rare Japanese-made Tiger Stripe jacket, stamped with the contract number TO78, is believed to date from the latter part of that era. It is an Asina-cut shirt in size A-M.

Since individual jackets with their original paper contract tags are occasionally discovered, it is highly likely that this TO78 contract lot was either delivered or contracted around the late 1970s. This is a particularly intriguing pattern among Japanese-made Tiger Stripe jackets, having been manufactured from the final stages of the Vietnam War through to the post-war period.

This item is labeled size A-M. Pieces bearing the TO78 contract number are highly likely to have been sewn in Japan, particularly in Okinawa, and are highly regarded as models that mark the final phase of Japanese-made tiger-stripe production.Although Tiger Stripe uniforms were subsequently produced in various countries, including South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines, the quality, fabric texture, and meticulous stitching of the Japanese-made versions remain in a class of their own even today.

While this camouflage generally belongs to the “Silver Tiger” pattern family, its detailed pattern composition differs from the early Silver Tiger patterns commonly seen in the mid-1960s.While it shares the contrast between thick black stripes and olive green, the flow and arrangement of the stripes exhibit characteristics unique to the later model, and it is treated as a distinct variation among collectors. In some circles, it is also referred to as “TDD.”

Many mysteries remain regarding this TO78-contract Tiger Stripe uniform—such as which units it was supplied to and the distribution channels through which it was used. These unknown aspects are, in fact, a major part of this model’s unique appeal.

The condition is excellent; the fabric retains its firm texture and is in superb condition, likely unused. While there are very slight signs of aging due to storage, there are almost no signs of wear, allowing you to fully appreciate the beautiful colors and fabric texture inherent to Japanese-made Tiger Stripe.

Combining historical significance, rarity, and excellent condition, this is a precious piece that is indispensable to any discussion of Japanese-made Tiger Stripe uniforms.
